Measure What Matters
I didn’t take a lot of math courses in college, but one of the most memorable courses I took was a math course. Introduction to Statistics. I can’t remember a single calculation but I learned a VERY valuable lesson: Data doesn’t lie, but statisticians can pretty much make it say anything they want. This week, we are talking about measuring what matters.
In business, numerical measurements serve as good guide posts. Things like revenue, profit, and marketshare are indicators but not the whole story. In our personal lives, however, numerical measurements typically do one of two things: inflate our ego, or tell us we aren’t good enough. Salaries, houses, likes, followers and the like aren’t any of the things that contribute to they type of measurements any of us really want.
My suggestion is that measuring our legacy matters. Not only in the macro, but also in the micro moments. What is the “wake” we leave behind with every interaction, every conversation, every post, and every comment?
I hope this episode helps us all get better about measuring what really matters in this world that highlights the frailty of data.
